What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. This is a unique, direct relationship between a farmer and the community where both parties share the rewards and risks of local agriculture. In simple terms, community members pay up-front for a season, and in exchange, the farmer supplies weekly boxes of fresh, in-season produce.
At Good Dirt Farm, we consider our CSA members to be the best of the best! The large majority of produce our members receive was harvested the day before, and CSA members get the first taste of limited or new produce that we grow. We also engage directly with CSA members for feedback so that we can make the best impact possible. Learn more about the benefits of a CSA here.
How it Works
Our summer CSA packages run 24 weeks, from the second week in May to mid-October. We deliver our shares each week on Friday afternoon to pickup locations in our area (Greensburg, Penn Hills, Millvale) and on our farm in the Latrobe area. We also offer a unique custom CSA package that allows you to order exactly what you want each week. Our 4 plans are below:
2025 CSA Plans
The “Dirt Box” – Weekly
$600 ($25/week)
A weekly share of fresh produce, curated by us! We often include recipes and tips for how to use your share. This share is perfect for a small family, a couple, or one voracious veggie eater!
The “Dirt Box” – Biweekly
$300 ($25/week)
You’ll receive the same share as weekly Dirt Box members every other week (12 weeks total). Perfect if you cook less or are looking for a good solo share!
Build Your Own – Large
$600
This share gives you $600 in store credit that you can use to put a order in through our online store each week. If we have it available, you get first dibs! This option is great for folks that know what they like or dedicated meal planners.
Build Your Own – Small
$250
This share gives you $250 in store credit that you can use to put an order in through our online store each week. This smaller share is an excellent choice for first-time CSA members who want to get a taste of local food.
FAQ
Where and when can I pick up my share?
Our shares are delivered on Friday afternoons, and pickup windows vary by pickup location. We currently deliver shares to Greensburg, Penn Hills, and Millvale, and we have on-farm pickup here in Latrobe. If you’re interested in a CSA but don’t have a pickup location near you, reach out! We are happy to expand our reach if possible.
What if I cant pick up my share?
If you are on vacation, out of town, or you have something else pop up that keeps you from getting your share, no worries! If you reach out to us, we can give you a double share the previous or following week, or donate your share to family, friends, or our farmers market.
What is included in a typical share?
Generally, you can expect a “Dirt Box” share to include some kind of fresh greens, a fresh herb, and a mix of in-season produce. We try our best to give you complimentary ingredients and recipes that put your share to good use. We also try to give a good mix of kitchen staples (things like lettuce, tomatoes, carrots etc.) and occasionally throw in eclectic items like Kohlrabi and Garlic Scapes to change things up!
Is your produce organic?
We have made a conscious choice to not get an organic certification, because we believe we go above and beyond those requirements. 100% of our growing methods are ecological and biological. This means that we don’t use any synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides, and we place a great emphasis on growing practices that promote the biodiversity of our land and soil. In short, we have the highest of standards when it comes to the food we eat, and would never give you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves.
How can I pay for a share?
We can take payment electronically via Venmo, or Square. You can also send us a check. Keep in mind that we have a limited number of shares available, and we can only reserve a share once we have received payment.
What if I run out of store credit?
If you run out of store credit before the end of the season, you can simply add more credit to your account, as often and as much as you’d like. Credit balances roll over year to year, but remaining balances CANNOT be used to pay for next year’s share.
What’s new in 2025?
While even the best laid plans can fall through when it comes to farming, we have several new things to get excited about! We hope to add our first fruits to the mix this year, with raspberries, cantaloupe, and even potentially strawberries. We’re also planning to increase our diversity of tomatoes and peppers, and add specialty crops like cauliflower and snap peas.
